Vinyl Semi-Privacy Fences: Privacy With Airflow and Light

Vinyl Screening

A vinyl semi-privacy fence filters the view: it softens the direct sightline into your yard while letting breeze and daylight pass through. It sits in the middle, more covered than an open picket and more open than a closed wall.

It suits a backyard you want private but breezy, or a shared line you would rather keep neighborly. We are a licensed vinyl installer and custom fabricator with 500+ five-star reviews, building since 2018, and we cut the config to your height and set it on site, never a flat-pack kit.

Semi-Privacy Vinyl, Built to Fit

Semi-privacy is the filtered middle, and the config you choose, shadowbox, spaced-board, or a lattice top, sets how much it screens.

Because we build picket, semi-privacy, and solid privacy fences, we can place you honestly in the middle and fabricate the config that fits, in your height and color. Vinyl handles the rest: no rot, no repainting, no rust.

What a semi-privacy vinyl fence is, and how much it screens

A semi-privacy vinyl fence filters your sightline instead of sealing it. Head on, your yard reads as screened: you catch shapes and light through the boards but not the detail, and air keeps moving. That is the honest middle.

The boards sit close with a small, even gap, or overlap on alternating sides of the rail, so it screens far more than an open picket yet stops short of a solid wall. Want the yard fully hidden? See our solid vinyl privacy fence. Want a clear see-through line instead? See the vinyl picket fence.

Which config sets your privacy: shadowbox, spaced-board, or a lattice top?

The style you choose is the dial. A shadowbox, or board-on-board, runs 7/8 by 6 inch boards on alternating sides of the rail, so it screens both directions and shows the same face on both sides.

That ends the argument over which neighbor gets the good side, and earns its good-neighbor name. A spaced-board panel sets 3 inch or 6 inch boards with a small gap for a lighter screen; dog-ear and alternating-board versions add a decorative edge.

Config What it delivers Best for
Shadowbox / board-on-board Most screening, same face both sides A shared boundary line
Spaced-board (3 or 6 in) A lighter, airier screen A breezy, open backyard
Lattice-top Solid lower, open decorative top A soft, partial-view top

A lattice top, picket top, or acrylic top keeps a solid lower panel with an open decorative top; that is a vinyl lattice fence. Any of these stands on 5 by 5 posts, rails, and caps.

Is a semi-privacy fence right for your yard?

It is the right call for a backyard or side yard you want breezy and bright but private, which a solid wall can smother on a hot inland lot.

When semi is not the answer, we send you to the fence that is: for full seclusion, a poolside sunbathing screen, or a windbreak for a garden, step up to the solid vinyl privacy fence; for a clear view and front-yard curb appeal, step down to the vinyl picket fence. And a gapped panel is not a code pool barrier, so a pool needs dedicated pool fencing.

Fabricated to your fence line, not a boxed panel kit

Almost every semi-privacy result online arrives as a flat kit you assemble yourself. We do the reverse: our crew measures the run, the shop cuts the boards to the config and your exact height, then we sink the posts in concrete, mount the panels with a matching gate, and leave the site clean.

Heights run 2 to 8 feet, plus any custom size on order. The odd runs, the stepped slopes, the small jobs other crews wave off? Those are usually the ones people bring to us.

How does a gapped vinyl panel handle wind?

Better than a solid wall, and the gaps are the reason. Because wind slips through the spaces and around the offset boards instead of pushing on a flat sail, a semi-privacy panel carries less wind load than a solid privacy fence, and it does not drum or boom the way a closed panel can in a gust. A tall or long run still gets a metal insert down the rail to hold it straight. It reads as vinyl outside; the reinforcement stays hidden.

What shapes the cost of a vinyl semi-privacy fence?

An installed price turns on run length, height, the config, gate count, the ground and slope, and whether the old fence has to be pulled. Config matters because a spaced-board panel uses less material than a solid privacy wall, while a shadowbox carries boards on both sides, so semi lands in the middle. Want the cheapest way to screen a yard?

That lighter spaced-board is usually it, but the real number comes after a free on-site measure, with Synchrony financing at nothing down and a same-day reply.

A backyard semi around 6 feet is commonly allowed by right on the side or rear line, though height and setback shift by city and some HOAs limit styles, so verify what applies with your local building department. Vinyl, aluminum, and wood each suit a different budget and look; this is the vinyl route.

Color between boards

Gaps do something to color. You see a finish in strips, plus the shadowed edge of every board sitting behind it, so a tone can look darker than the same chip does on a solid panel. Plain solids stay cleanest. Grained faces show figure. Textured blends are coarsest.

When the middle is not it

Filtered is a middle setting, and plenty of yards want an end instead: solid the whole way along the back, wide open across the front. We build both, and the opening that breaks a run is made to match whichever you land on.

Customer Reviews

  • Great service and pricing. Many more custom options than other companies. For example we wanted the fence to be 7ft in one area and 8 Ft in another area. Since they manufacture their own fencing they do. All others we contacted just do 6 ft.

  • I had a great experience working with Mike and Jasmine at Pro Vinyl fence! They were very responsive, and quickly came out to give me a quote, which was way less than their competitors. They scheduled installation quickly and did a great job. I love my fence! Highly recommend.

How-To Guides

Common Questions

Vinyl semi-privacy fencing: common questions

These are the questions that actually settle a semi-privacy project: what the style really is, which config to pick, whether it looks right from both sides, how private it feels, how a gapped panel takes wind, and what colors you can get. Anything else, ask the same team that would build yours.

Not sure which config?

Book a free on-site look and we will walk your yard and talk it through.

It is the filtered middle. Space the boards a hair apart, or lap them front and back across the rail, and it blurs what shows through while air and daylight keep moving.

You catch shapes and brightness, not detail, so it hides more than an open picket but never seals the yard like a solid wall.

Two builds, two amounts of cover. Shadowbox stacks planks front and back along the rail for the heaviest screen and a matching face each way, the good-neighbor look.

Spaced-board lines up 3 inch or 6 inch planks a slim gap apart, lighter and airier. Shadowbox gives full cover, spaced-board more air.

Yes, that is its signature. Because the planks switch from one face of the rail to the other, the run looks the same handsome way from either yard.

There is no rough back to bury toward a neighbor and no quarrel over the nicer side. That is why the trade nicknames it the good-neighbor fence.

For everyday backyard living, yes: it screens the view from neighbors and the street while passing the breeze a solid wall traps.

For full seclusion or a sunbathing screen, step up to the solid privacy fence. And an open-gapped panel is no pool-barrier, so a pool itself needs dedicated pool fencing.

It handles wind well, and the openings are why. Air spills through the gaps rather than shoving on a flat sail, so a semi run takes on less load than a solid privacy wall and skips the booming a closed panel makes in a gust.

On a tall or exposed line we thread a metal stiffener through the rail.

Yes. The full 14-color vinyl range is open to semi-privacy: solid standards, wood-look TimberGrain textures, and smooth woodgrains, three families altogether.

Color runs through the material, not over the surface, so it needs no repainting and never yellows. We settle your shade at the estimate.
