Alameda’s fence code, under Municipal Code Title 17 Section 17.52.430, runs in steps rather than one flat number. Front yards top out at 3 ft, extendable to 4 ft with see-through material, or to 5 ft total with Planning Permit approval.

Side and rear yards allow 6 ft, extendable to 8 ft with see-through material, except in visibility zones where 3 ft is the maximum. A building permit applies above 7 ft, and masonry walls need one regardless of height.

Corner lots need extra care

Because Alameda caps visibility zones at 3 ft, corner and driveway-adjacent lots often can’t use the same height as a straight side yard, even with see-through material worked into the design. We check sight lines against the current code before finalizing height on any corner property, rather than assuming the standard 6 or 8 ft side yard allowance simply carries over to a corner situation.

Aluminum Finishes
