Fencing Built for Malibu Properties

Coastal lots, canyon lots and stretches along Pacific Coast Highway call for a fence built to the site, never off a shelf.

Vinyl and aluminum fencing, both installed and fabricated in-house for Malibu homes, from bluff-top privacy runs to pool enclosures tucked into the canyons, with every panel racked to the actual grade of the lot.

Services we offer in Malibu

Both coastal and canyon lots sit on our schedule in Malibu: vinyl privacy and semi-privacy runs, pool-code enclosures for bluff-top decks, picket and two-tone styles for street-facing yards, and aluminum wall toppers set on an existing block wall to add height without tearing it out.

A gate built to match comes with every style, sized anywhere from a narrow walk-through to a wide driveway span and framed to hold its shape for years. Odd corners, small jobs and single-gate repairs get the same attention as a full property enclosure.

What shapes a Malibu quote

A number for a Malibu yard depends on more than footage. Slope on a canyon lot changes how posts get set, since a steep grade means racking each panel individually instead of running a straight line. Salt exposure on a coastal lot can steer the material choice toward vinyl over aluminum, given the coating limits on aluminum near saltwater.

Tearing out an existing fence before the new one goes in adds to the total too, right alongside gate count and overall height. A ballpark over the phone is fine for planning; a walked lot is what turns it into a real number, free and with no obligation attached.

Salt air and the wildland-urban interface

Malibu sits directly on the Pacific, and that ocean exposure is the first thing that shapes a fence here. Aluminum’s coating is excluded from warranty coverage in saltwater and coastal air, so lots close to the water usually do better in vinyl, which is PVC through and through and does not pit, rust or yellow from salt spray.

Inland and hillside parcels sit inside wildland-urban interface zones, where fire-safety expectations shape material choice at the property line as much as style does. Either way, the site visit is where those calls actually get made.

Height limits and permits, in brief

Side and rear fences top out at 6 ft under Chapter 17.40 of the Malibu Municipal Code, and fences at or under that height are generally exempt from a building permit while still needing Planning Department approval. Front-yard limits run stricter and depend on the specific lot.

Fences near a bluff, near public beach access, or close to the immediate coastline can also need a Coastal Development Permit. None of this is legal advice: confirm the specifics for a given address with the Planning Department before ordering material.

Coast Light, Canyon Shade

A bluff lot and a canyon lot do not read a color the same way. Light off the water flattens a tone; shade under the growth deepens it. Vinyl carries the range to answer both. Aluminum keeps its answer short.

Texture Sorts the Vinyl

Texture is the axis here. Standard solids carry none of it. The wood grain group fills the middle, six tones with a milled surface. Four TimberGrain blends push the relief furthest. Years of sun leave the tone where it started.

Metal Out in the Weather

Exposure out here does nothing to a powder coat finish, charged on dry and cured under heat, bonded rather than painted. Contoured slats have exactly one, matte black. The rest of the profiles take black, white or the grain look.

What the Number Answers To

Two sites on one road can need two different numbers. What the fence screens sets the first, the slope under it moves the second, and the limit on that property caps whatever is left. Every run gets cut after we measure it.

Reviews From Malibu Fence Customers

  • During the free estimate they pointed things out to do. We had a stump in the way which would make the installation uneven. They waited till we could have it removed, and had the job done in one day. Very clean, polite, and efficient crew that showed up, and left it cleaner than they found it.

Very happy with the job they did.

  • Fast and reliable service. Great Price. LOVED the finished product.

Beautiful job and the installers were very fast and cleaned up everything to perfection, including washing down the entire fence and gate with cleaner and water to make sure it was super clean before leaving. They were super nice and finished in a very short time. LOVE IT!!!

Fencing Notes for Malibu, California

An incorporated coastal city

Malibu incorporated in March 1991 and covers roughly 21 miles of Pacific coastline in northwest Los Angeles County, about 30 miles from downtown Los Angeles. With a population near 10,700, it stays low-density by design: large lots, long private frontages, and Pacific Coast Highway running the length of the city as its main corridor.

What the coast does to a fence

Ocean exposure is constant here, not occasional. Salt-laden air corrodes untreated metal and dulls painted finishes faster than almost anywhere inland, which is why the aluminum warranty carves out an exception for saltwater exposure and asks for a coating rinse every 6 months on coastal jobs. Vinyl sidesteps the problem: the color runs through the PVC itself, so salt spray has nothing to strip or fade.

Fire zones and hillside grading

Away from the immediate coastline, Malibu’s canyon and hillside parcels sit inside wildland-urban interface territory, where brush and terrain bring fire-safety expectations into material decisions at the property line. Those same hillside lots also demand grading know-how: a fence racked to a steep slope needs posts set individually to the terrain so the line reads level even when the ground does not.

Height rules, briefly

Chapter 17.40 of the Malibu Municipal Code caps side and rear fences at 6 ft, restricts height and placement inside corner sight triangles, and requires Planning Department approval on fences at or under that cap, not just above it.

Front-yard limits are tighter and lot-specific. A Coastal Development Permit can also apply near bluffs or beach access. Verify the specifics locally with Malibu’s Planning Department before finalizing plans.

How a Malibu Fence Project Actually Runs

Our Process

A Malibu install starts the same way every time: someone stands on the actual lot, reads the slope, the coastal exposure and the fire zone, and writes down a real number instead of a rough phone guess based on a description.

No pressure, no vague ranges, just a written plan you can hold onto before the crew ever shows up.

  1. Free On-Site Visit

A team member walks the lot, checks salt and wind exposure, and measures for an exact figure before anything’s signed.

  2. Written Contract

Material, height, color and every gate get written into the contract, so the visit number is the number you pay.

  3. Quality Installation

Our crew sets each post to the exact grade, hangs panels and gates plumb, then clears the old fence off the property.

  4. Warranty Handoff

Warranty travels with the fence: 20 years on aluminum, a lifetime term on vinyl, plus our own 5-year labor guarantee.

Malibu Municipal Code Chapter 17.40 caps side and rear fences at 6 ft in most residential zones.

Front-yard limits are stricter and vary by lot, so front-yard height should be confirmed with the Planning Department before materials are ordered.

Fences that affect public beach access, sit on a bluff, or stand near the immediate beachfront can trigger a Coastal Development Permit in Malibu.

Verify locally with the Planning Department before starting work on a coastal-adjacent lot.

Fences at or under 6 ft are generally exempt from a building permit but still need Planning Department approval. Anything taller, or any wall-style fence, should be verified locally before work begins.

Coastal salt exposure is excluded from the standard aluminum coating warranty, and the finish needs a documented rinse every 6 months this close to the ocean.

Vinyl, which never yellows or pits from salt, is usually the steadier choice on bluff and beachfront lots.

Malibu Municipal Code restricts fence height and placement within the corner sight triangle at intersections, to keep sightlines open for drivers.

A site-specific check with the Planning Department confirms what a given corner lot allows.

Yes. Canyon and hillside lots get panels racked to the slope so the fence line follows the grade instead of stair-stepping, with fire-hazard-zone materials factored into the plan for lots in the wildland-urban interface.
