From Zelzah to the Valley’s horse country
Northridge started as Zelzah, a Southern Pacific railroad stop that opened around 1908 and shipped the walnuts and citrus grown across the Valley floor. The name became North Los Angeles in the late 1920s, then Northridge in 1938, for its spot along the Valley’s northern ridge. In the 1930s the horse ranches here earned the nickname Horse Capital of the West, and a few large lots still keep that open feel.

Whose rules apply to a Northridge fence?
Because Northridge is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles rather than its own city, fence rules come from the City, not from LA County. Under the Los Angeles Municipal Code (12.22 C.20(f)), a front-yard fence is generally capped at 3.5 feet, side and rear fences can reach 6 feet, and up to 8 feet on many non-hillside residential lots at least 40 feet wide.
Anything taller than the zoning cap needs Planning approval, and a non-masonry fence needs an LADBS building permit only above 10 feet. The Good Neighbor Fence Act also asks for 30 days’ written notice before building on a shared boundary. Rules shift by zone and lot, so verify your project with LA City Planning and LADBS.
