About Santa Clarita
Santa Clarita is an incorporated general-law city with its own council and code, formed December 15, 1987 when Valencia, Newhall, Saugus, and Canyon Country joined into one city.
With about 228,673 residents it is the third-largest city in Los Angeles County, set along the Santa Clara River between the San Gabriel and Santa Susana Mountains, near Six Flags Magic Mountain. What matters for fencing is jurisdiction: because Santa Clarita is its own city, its own code governs your fence, not the county’s.
How Tall Can a Fence Be in Santa Clarita?
Because Santa Clarita is its own city, its Unified Development Code section 17.57.070 sets fence heights, not county rules. In a front yard or beside a street or driveway, a view-obscuring fence tops out at 42 inches, or 48 for open pipe or rail. Side and rear lines allow up to 6 feet by right.
Above 6 feet, up to 15 feet is permitted only in a required rear yard through an Adjustment under section 17.24.100, with a permit generally required over 6 feet. We fabricate to whatever height your parcel allows; confirm the exact limits with the City of Santa Clarita Planning Division and Building & Safety.
Fencing for Santa Clarita’s Wind and Wildfire Country
Santa Clarita’s dry chaparral hills and Santa Ana exposure make it real wildfire country, with much of the hillsides in high or very high fire hazard severity. For wind, a properly footed vinyl fence with metal inserts stands up to the gusts these canyons channel. For fire, aluminum is non-combustible, a sensible pick where a yard backs onto open brush.
Shared Fences, Pools, and Local Rules
Two statewide rules also apply. Under the Good Neighbor Fence Act, Civil Code section 841, neighbors are presumed to split a boundary fence’s cost equally, after 30 days’ written notice.
For a pool, the barrier code wants at least 60 inches of height, no gap a 4-inch sphere passes, and self-closing, self-latching gates, with vinyl an approved non-climbable barrier. If your community has an HOA, its approval may be required on top of the City code.

White Vinyl Gate Replacement
This Santa Clarita property had an aging wood privacy gate that had reached the end of its service life. Our crew removed the old wood gate and replaced it with a white vinyl single gate topped with a vertical picket style, installed in February 2025.
The new gate had to fit an exact opening, running between the house and an existing masonry column, so the frame was built to that specific width rather than a standard size. Support for the gate was set at the soil line and again at the edge of the paved walkway that runs alongside it, anchoring the structure at both points.

White Picket Driveway Gate
A black metal gate previously stood at the driveway entrance on this Santa Clarita property, fitted into an opening between two masonry walls that frame the driveway on either side. It was replaced with a white vinyl double gate, built wide enough to span that same concrete driveway opening.
Each panel carries a close vertical picket pattern across the top, in place of the metal gate it replaced. That picket top does two jobs at once: it screens the driveway from view while still letting air move through at the top, rather than sealing the opening off the way a solid panel would.
